非常に小さな、極小の村が始まるところ、波の音と松風の音がする渚辺に人がひとり現われて、家というものが出来あがるところから始めたかったのである。その家が二軒三軒になり、つまり自分のいま居る村が出来、町になり、気がつけばもう人間は沢山いて、それぞれ微妙に異なる影を持ち、異なる者が仕事を持ち、その仕事の選択の仕方によって社会というものも出来ぐあいが異なってくる。それには風土の条件があり、他郷の者とどのように交わって文化（暮らしの形としての文化）を創りあげ、その文化はどのような地下の根を持っているのか、形をなぞって見たかった。地上の形はごらんの通りなので、なぜそうなるのか根の育ち方を知りたかった。

目に一丁字もない人間が、この世をどう見ているか、それが大切である。権威も肩書も地位もないただの人間がこの世の仕組みの最初のひとりであるから、と思えた。それを百年分くらい知りたい。それくらいあれば、一人の人間を軸とした家と村と都市と、その時代がわかる手がかりがつくだろう。そういう人間に百年前を思い出してもらうには、西南役が思い出しやすいだろう。始めたときそう思っていた。

石牟礼道子はロックに似ている。たとえば、石牟礼道子の「西南役伝説」のあとがきは、Dire Straits の Mark Knopfler が作詞した「Telegraph Road」そのものではないか。
それだけではない。ありとあらゆる文章がロックなのだ。Beatles の John Lennon が作詞した「Imagine」を思い起こさせる文章、そして Mountain の Felix Pappalardi とその奥さんの Gail Collins が作詞した「One last cold kiss」を思い起こさせる描写。
人は石牟礼道子のことを「前近代」と決めつけ、まるで呪いをかける巫女のように言うけれど、石牟礼道子は世界中のクールな人たちととてもよく似た感性を持っている。
